Suicide bomber targets Afghan peace council advisor

The burnt out remains from a suicide attack in the Afghan capital.

This is all that's left of an armoured car.

The target was a top High Peace Council advisor on talks with the Taliban.

But Mohammed Masoom Stanikzai escaped unharmed.

Police have cordoned off the area, launching an investigation.

One civilian was killed and several others were wounded.

(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) SHOPKEEPER, SULIMAN JAN SAYING:

"I was sitting in my shop when I heard a huge blast and all of my shop goods fell, I came out and saw smoke and dust covering the area also there were human flesh on the street."

No group has claimed responsibility for this attack but Taliban militants have recently launched a series of assaults, repeatedly threatening to target the election campaign.

The bomb came just hours before these demonstrations in Kabul.
