Iraq conducts air strikes on ISIL targets

The Iraqi defence ministry released on Sunday (June 15) video showing air strikes conducted by Iraqi air force targeting Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in Mosul and north of Baghdad.

Iraqi government forces on Sunday reported regaining territory in counter-attacks after days of lightning advances by ISIL forces.

The rapid advance south by the ISIL fighters towards Baghdad appeared to slow over the weekend.

ISIL fighters and other Sunni Muslim armed groups have stormed several towns on the road to Baghdad after seizing Mosul nearly a week ago but the offensive stalled as it approached the mainly Shi'ite capital.

The Iraqi military said it was now holding back the rebels and also, with the help of Shi'ite militia, clawing back some territory.

It was far from clear whether government forces could sustain their reported revival against ISIL, given serious weaknesses including poor morale and corrup
