Bulgaria: Anniversary protests repeat calls for government to quit

A year after a security scandal prompted calls for Bulgaria’s government to resign, protesters are keeping up the pressure.
They gathered outside parliament in Sofia and across the country, repeating their demands which were sparked by a bungled big to impose a media mogul as head of national security, without any debate.
“The politics is the same. We can’t wait for this resignation …many people at this square have been fighting for it for a whole year,” said one woman taking part in the demonstration in the capital.
A man summed up his wish in two words: “Resignation. Immediately.”
Tomatoes were thrown at parliament, to demonstrate the disgust felt by many at the failure of those at the top to tackle corruption and organised crime in the EU’s poorest country.
The coalition government is hanging on – surviving a fifth no-confidence vote on Friday but it is still expected to resign soon after a poor showing by the ruling Socialists in May’s European Parliament elections.
