Dozens killed in massacre in eastern Congo

A massacre in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Residents in the eastern province of South Kivu stand helpless after up to 37 people were killed.

The victims include women and children. They were found shot, stabbed or burned inside their homes.

The regional governor blames the attack on a dispute over cattle.

Residents though see it differently.

(SOUNDBITE) (Swahili) LOCAL RESIDENT, ALAIN KIKUNI, SAYING:

"The police and the army know there are armed militias who are not more than 20 kilometers from here. The army is also here and government knows about them, the commander of the army based in Bukavu knows about their existence, even the governor. It is actually the second time the killings have taken place here and we wonder why the government allows them to operate freely."

The province is home to members of tribes who fled neighboring Burundi after a civil war in 2005.
