Paris gets a new Queen as Elizabeth is honoured with flowery title

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth the second has a plethora of titles and honours, but she was clearly delighted with her latest, bestowed upon her by Paris’s main flower market on Saturday as she stopped off on her way back from the D-Day commemorations.

Elizabeth is now Queen of the Flower Market in this corner of the 4th arrondissement, and concluding her fifth state visit to France she was accompanied by the French President François Hollande and the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo. The Queen was only a princess when she made her first visit to the flower market, back in 1948.

Hidalgo had earlier created a minor stir when welcoming the Queen to the capital, as she used an umbrella in the light drizzle, without offering one to her majesty. But then Elizabeth was wearing a hat, and the stuff falling from the sky hardly merited any English definition of rain.

To cries of “Long live the Queen” Elizabeth made her way around the stalls, just metres from where Marie Antoinette had been imprisoned.
