The Giant Gila Monster (1959)

In classic Fifties drive-in mode, a gigantic beastie (seemingly out of nowhere) emerges from the desert to menace the surrounding countryside and the obligatory assortment of rockin' "teenagers" minding their own Fifties-teenager business at the record hop. (Don't tell Scooby, but this monster's REAL.)

Veteran cinematographer Ray Kellogg makes his directorial debut with this little monster opus that is much better than it might sound. Working alongside producer Ken Curtis and the same crew that also unleashed THE KILLER SHREWS as part of a drive-in double-bill, he delivers sharp cinematography alongside some decent special effects for this off-the-wall lizard's tale. Ah, the children of the Fifties...
