Police are on scene of a drive-by shooting near the University of California at Santa Barbara.

At least six people were killed when a lone gunman sprayed bullets from a vehicle.

The Country Sheriff said seven more people were wounded in what is described as a "premeditated atrocity."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING:

"(sobbing) I just thought it was like an airsoft gun or something, so I was like hey what up? And I turned around and started walking the other way, and then like he shot (crying)."

The Sheriff said deputies twice exchanged fire with the gunman.

This, before his vehicle crashed. He was found dead inside from a gunshot wound to the head.

It is not clear whether the suspected gunman was killed by deputies or died of a self-inflicted wound.
