Pope Francis heads to Jordan for start of three day Middle East visit
The Pope is beginning a three day visit to the Middle East in Jordan.
Pope Francis will travel to the capital Amman, where he will hold Mass in a stadium, and then meet Syrian refugees.
He will also visit holy sites around the kingdom, including the Jordan River, near to where John the Baptist is believed to have baptised Jesus.
Security is tight and hundreds of police officers have been deploying on the streets of the capital and at sites where the Pope will visit.
The pontiff will be accompanied by a rabbi and an imam who are friends from his native Argentina and says he hopes to improve relations between Christians, Muslims and Jews.
On Sunday, he will head to Bethlehem in the West Bank for a Mass in Manger Square, near the site where Jesus is believed to have been born in Palestine.
On Monday the Pope is due to visit the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City as well as the Dome of the Rock and the Western Wall.
