A bystander who was shot during clashes between Turkish police and protesters in Istanbul on Thursday has died from his wounds.

Thirty-year-old Ugur Kurt had apparently been attending a funeral close to the protests when he was shot.

It’s still unclear who is responsible.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc announced that prosecutors would open an investigation into the death.

The clashes began after police tried to disperse a small gorup of protesters in the Okeydani district who were chanting slogans about the Soma mining tragedy which killed 301 people last week.

Police fired live rounds into the air and used water cannon as protesters hurled rocks and petrol bombs.

In total seven policemen and two civilians were also wounded in the violence which lasted into the night.
