A Filipina maid was severely burned after the mother of her boss drenched her with boiling hot water as punishment for not making coffee quickly enough.
The 23-year-old maid was employed for two months in Saudi Arabia. According to reports, her male boss would constantly kick and beat the woman, identified by the pseudonym Fatma, because she was homesick and cried a lot.
The man's wife no longer wanted Fatma in the house and she was transferred to the home of the man's mother.
The scalding attack occurred when the mother became angry over how long it was taking to brew coffee.
The family waited six hours to take Fatma to hospital. During a follow-up visit to get new bandages, Fatma managed to pass a note secretly to one of the attending nurses.
That note contained contact information for her family in the Philippines. A cousin also working in Saudi Arabia came to Fatma's rescue.
Fatma's wounds have been documented and she is now recuperating under the protection of the Philippine embassy.
