An Indian baby girl was born last month with the head of her parasitic twin attached to her stomach. The mother, 22-year-old Amlekha Bairva, gave birth to the baby at a small hospital in her village. She did not know she was pregnant with twins. After the baby was born, she rushed to JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur for neonatal intensive care.
Parasitic twins are different from conjoined twins in that in the former, one of the twins ceases development during gestation and becomes an vestigial appendage to the other fully formed, otherwise healthy twin."
The baby girl's father, 29-year-old Ramji Lal Bairva, told reporters that as his first child was born normal, and because the family is too poor for any sort of treatment, his wife did not receive prenatal checkups or ultrasound scans."
After evaluation, medical professionals at JK Lone Hospital told reporters that they will remove the extra head as soon as the baby's condition is stable. Pediatric surgeon Chetan Sharma said the baby has has a good prognosis of living a normal life post surgery, as she has a normal heartbeat and no other internal or external complications.
The hospital has confirmed that all the medical fees for the little girl's treatment will be waived.
