Dog shelter works to reunite animals with owners after floods

A Serbian dog shelter works to reunite pets with their owners separated by the country's severe flooding.

Some 30,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in Serbia over the past week.

Many were forced to leave behind their pets as the floodwaters hit quickly.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) EVACUEE OF NEARBY TOWN OF OBRENOVAC, IVANA PETRONIJEVIC, SAYING:

"All the police and all the army started to shout 'evacuation, evacuation, river is coming' and we had to run. And our dogs are not young dogs and they ran as they can with us and we couldn't wait then because all police said 'go go go, go'."

Around 30 dogs are currently being cared for at the shelter.

The dog shelter's owner, Vesna Pokopljevic, says many of the dogs are in a state of shock when they arrive.
