Description
Manpreet Akhtar is the younger sister to Dilshad Akhtar [late] an avid fan of famous Sufi poet Bulley Shah, Manpreet sang the famous Dama Dum Mast Kalandar. She also sang Heer (a Waris Shah composition), Amir Khusro's Chap tilak sab cheeni and Ae ri sakhi morey Khwaja ghar aaye at The Ashok Hotel. The performance was part of the on going Delhi International Arts Festival organized by Prasiddha Foundation in association with The Times of India. Swaying to the music, Manpreet enthralled the audience with her soulful renditions. Many senior citizens could be seen enjoying themselves.

Akhtar's musical training began early when she was barely two, under her father popular Punjabi folk and qawwali singer Keerakhan Shokeen. She later learnt classical from Pt Krishna Kant Sharma; her first stage public performance was in 1996. "Girls in our family are forbidden to sing, but the Sufi in me was persistent,'' she says.

For Manpreet, Sufism is a way of life. Also, the songs come natural to her because she grew up listening to her father and brother Dilshad Akhtar, both Sufi singers. "Gayaki mujhey virasat mein mili hai aur iskey liye mein bahut shukar guzaar hoon,'' says the gold medallist and MA in music from Patiala University.

Influenced by veteran melody queens Noorjehan, Reshma, Parveen Sultana and Runa Laila, Manpreet has performed across the world the US, Canada, Dubai, Malaysia to Singapore. She has also lent her voice to Punjabi films. Her favourite performances are those with popular Pakistan singer Reshma. "She has been a source of encouragement to me all along and we've sung together for many stage shows''.
