There are water slides, and then there are waterfalls. Orlando's newest water slide resembles the latter more than anything else. SeaWorld's attached water park Aquatica has finished construction of its newest, and the city's highest, waterslide, Ihu's Breakaway Falls.
The slide requires riders to climb up eight storeys of steps before they can choose from one of four color coded tubes to ride in. Three of the slides are topped with a gallows-like trap door which can either be triggered by the rider, or released without warning by an operator, adding to the thrill.
The trap door slides all start with an approximately 40 foot drop into a nearly vertical 80 degree tube, then shoot the rider through one or more 360 degree lateral loops before spitting the rider out, dazed and amazed into the braking pool at the bottom.
The fourth slide, colored purple, doesn't have a trap door because it also has the steepest drop in it. Riders have to mentally steel themselves before pushing off into the wet unknown.
Though the new attraction is the highest waterslide in Orlando, it isn't the highest in the world. That distinction goes to the 17-story high Verruckt slide in Kansas City's Schlitterbahn water park.
