Criticism and light controversy as Cannes kicks off

You might recognise the sun, sea and sand on this part of the French Riviera.

This year though it's Cannes - just maybe not as you know it.

As the 67th International Film Festival prepares to welcome the world of cinema there's concern it won't be as glamorous as usual.

Ramin Setoodeh is Senior Editor at movie industry magazine, Variety.

"The film industry like are other industries and businesses right now is hurting a little bit, you see Cannes scaling back. And you see it... for Cannes, for Cannes standards it's a little smaller than Cannes usually is."

Stars like Nicole Kidman and Ryan Gosling are still expected to attend - the latter making his directorial debut.

But the opening festival film "Grace of Monaco" is itself expected to prove controversial.
