Blood and gore stain this busy Mogadishu street.

At least six people died here in the Somali capital on Saturday when a remote controlled bomb went off.

Police say it was hidden in a pile of rubbish along the road.

It was planted there, they say, by al Shabaab Islamic insurgents linked to al Qaeda.

Witnesses say at least 25 others were wounded in the blast.

Among the fatalities: a senior city council official and his guards.

Their car was passing through this commercial center when the bomb went off, prompting police to fire their guns in the air.
