A California man was shot and killed after an extended chase ended with an officer-involved shooting in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The suspect clashed with the security officers at a Target on the 1600 block of South Alameda Street in Compton at around 2:45 p.m. Sheriff's deputies arrived to help detain the man when he allegedly pulled out a pair of garden shears from his waistband before fleeing to an SUV and driving away with police in pursuit.
The man's vehicle was cornered near the Long Beach coastline on the 1800 block of East Ocean Boulevard. He emerged from the SUV 15 minutes later reportedly holding a large wooden stick before fleeing again down some steps towards the beach.
Footage captured on a witness's cellphone shows the man being chased by a police dog when he is shot in the back by police. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
