A wave of tornadoes ripped through the south-central United States Sunday night (April 27), killing at least 16 people in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa.

Arkansas was the hardest hit, with at least 10 people dead in central Faulkner County and four more across the state, for the first reported fatalities of this year's U.S. tornado season, authorities said.

"This may be one of the strongest that we've seen, and preliminarily - we haven't done any records check - but it looks like this is the largest loss of life in one tornado incident since I've been governor," said Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe at a news conference on M
