Violence rages in Baghdad

A car bomb and a suicide bomber killed at least 17 people in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City

No one is immediately claiming responsibility for the attacks

The district is a stronghold of Shi'ite radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and has been a frequent scene of attacks.

A resident asks why us?

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMED, CITY RESIDENT, SAYING:

"We are not politicians. We are not the government. If they have a quarrel with the politicians and the government, they can go to the Green Zone."

Sectarian bloodshed is mounting in Iraq since the Shi'ite-led government began an offensive against Sunni insurgents in the western province of Anbar.

In 2013, violence spiked with nearly 8,000 civilians were killed.

The latest attacks come as Iraqis prepare to hold parliamentary elections April 30th with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki seeking a third term.
