At least ten dead when truck slams into student bus in California

This is all that remains of a tour bus after a tractor trailer slammed into it on a California highway on Thursday.

At least ten people are dead, many of them high school students.

SOUNDBITE (English) BUS PASSENGER DESHA ARTHUR SAYING:

"I just kind of see black, there was fire at the front of the bus, it's crushed in the front pretty much so we all start jumping up to run away."

The college hopefuls from Los Angeles were on their way to a campus tour.

About 34 people were taken to area hospitals.

It is still unclear why the driver of a FedEx truck lost control and crossed a divider on the Interstate. It side swiped a car before smashing into the bus head-on.

SOUNDBITE (English) CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER, LACEY HEITMA, SAYING:

"There's a very large debris field, the physical evidence as far as the tire friction marks on the road way. All of those things are just pieces of a puzzle that they're going to have to put together."
