The Diabetic Foot

The Mid-Michigan Foot and Ankle Centers / Diabetic Foot Centers specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of foot problems in patients with diabetes. My staff and I are devoted to identifying and treating foot and ankle problems in these patients and have developed these centers in response to the overwhelming need to address the multiple lower extremity complications that may occur including infections, ulcerations, gangrene, and in the most severe cases amputation of a toe, foot, or leg.

I have always believed that management of foot and ankle problems for patients with diabetes is complex and requires multiple specialists working together. Success in the care of foot and ankle problems in these patients’ can only result when there is an overall control of each component of their disease. That is why my staff and I work closely with each patient, their medical doctor, vascular surgeon, nurse educator, or home health care specialist in order to accomplish these goals.

Over the last 12 years I have treated thousands of patients for their acute and chronic wounds. As a board certified Wound Care Specialist, I am an original faculty member at National’s Wound Healing Center at Covenant HealthCare since it opened in September, 2002. There, I continue to help establish wound care protocols as an active member of the limb salvage team in a center that provides a multidisciplinary approach to wound care and the only full body hyperbaric chamber in Mid-Michigan. If you have a diabetic wound and need assistance, contact us to make an appointment. While I can never guarantee outcomes, I may be able to help.
The Diabetic Shoe Clinic
In March of 2002 in accordance with Medicare’s Diabetic Shoe Bill (1993) and in an effort to lower the amputation rate in the diabetic population of the Tri-City’s, I opened, “The Diabetic Shoe Clinic”. Working with patients, pedorthotists, and shoe companies we have been able to evaluate, educate, custom fit, and identify the most appropriate shoe gear, inserts and braces for our diabetic patients that are at risk.

My staff and I find that this has resulted in much better follow-up with our patients and that there has been a decrease in the number of recurrent wounds, quicker healing times and ultimately higher patient satisfaction.
