A confectionary billionaire and a former Ukrainian Prime Minister are going head to head in the country's May elections.

Here in capital Kiev, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and confectionary billionaire Petro Poroshenko submit their registrations.

Crimea's been the center of attention following the region's annexation to Russia, raising tensions to the highest they've been between East and West since the Cold War.

Tensions aside, Tymoshenko is calling for unity.

"I think it's high time now in Ukraine to bring order to all spheres of our life. To defend Ukraine from aggressors, to return justice to people - they have been waiting for many years - get rid of corruption and oligarchs in Ukraine and build a strong economy and build a European Ukraine."

While Poroshenko thinks Ukraine needs a new system.
