The election race has begun in Ukraine where former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko has said she plans to run for president.

She has twice been prime minister, but was unsuccessful in her 2010 presidential election bid.

Tymoshenko told reporters she would stand as “a candidate for Ukrainian unity”, and said her 2014 campaign would be one of “direct action”.

Meanwhile former boxer Vitaliy Klitschko has announced he will not be standing in the forthcoming elections, expected to be held in May

Instead, he has chosen to endorse chocolate tycoon Petro Poroshenko.

One of Ukraine’s richest men, Poroshenko is currently the most popular candidate for president, according to recent opinion polls.
