Anders Aslund, an economist who served as a senior adviser to Boris Yeltsin in the early 1990s, has often been very right about where Russia is headed, when others - including Putin himself - have been very wrong.
Although the Russian president seems unfazed so far by Western threats of sanctions over Crimea and even publicly mocked them, Anders Aslund thinks he should be more careful. Severe sanctions could push Russia over the financial cliff. Even Ukraine is not powerless, he adds, and may retaliate against Moscow by not paying the huge debt Kiev owes to Russia or by nationalising Russian enterprises in Ukraine.
