Russia consolidates Crimea control

Russia consolidates its hold on Crimea as one of the last Ukrainian-controlled military bases falls to its troops.

Armoured vehicles, stun grenades and gunfire marked the Russian seizure of the Belek air base on Saturday.

It was the final chapter in the base's resistance after Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

Its airstrip and warplanes had already been seized at the start of the crisis.

One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded during the Russian assault.

The base commander's been detained at an unidentified location for talks.

A naval base also fell under Russian control as Ukrainian forces abandoned it following attacks by pro-Russian protesters.

Ukraine's fleet flagship and the nation's only submarine, too, were surrendered to Russian forces.
