In Crimea, a woman who trusts cats more than people

This Crimea resident isn't phased by the political referendum going on outside her home.

While people in her town are lining up to vote on whether her home gets annexed to Russia --

She's cozy in the comfort of home with 55 cats, that she's been saving for 10 years now.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RAISA ZHUKOVA, SEVASTOPOL RESIDENT LIVING WITH 55 CATS, SAYING:

"The more I communicate with animals the more I'm disappointed by people. In an animal you can see a true devoted love and honesty. An animal will never betray you, will never hurt you as a man can hurt you and betray you. They are different from people as they don't know how to betray."

She lives with her daughter and granddaughter in a one-bedroom apartment.

And barely makes enough to feed her family.

Despite a medical condition she can't afford to treat.

Her selfless act keeps her going.
