A huge blast brought down two five-story buildings, with a total of 15 apartments near East 116th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem at 9:30 am on Wednesday.
According to CNN, at least four people were killed by the explosion and 64 people were injured. Nine people are reportedly still missing on late Wednesday. A gas leak that was reported to Consolidated Edison at 9:13 am, just about 15 minutes before the blast, was said to be "the only indication of danger". The utility reportedly dispatched a truck two minutes later but it arrived after the explosion.
The buildings were once near the heart of New York's Puerto Rican community, which housed a piano store and an evangelical church in addition to the apartments. All were destroyed.
