SHOOTING RENEWS CALLS FOR FIFA TO SUSPEND ISRAEL
Some 3,800 people have signed this online petition urging FIFA, the international governing body of football, to suspend Israel from its competitions. Campaigning against Israel`s football league membership has stepped up a notch following an incident at the end of January, when Israeli soldiers reportedly shot two Palestinian football players, Jawhar Nasser Jawhar, aged 19 and Adam Halabiya, aged 17, in the feet and legs. As explained on the website of daily newspaper Haaretz, security forces said the teenagers were terrorists, but countless social networkers say they are the latest victims of the IDF`s indiscriminate violence.
Web users have been voicing their outrage, saddened by the fact it`s unlikely the two young footballers will ever play again… this is what Palestinian press agency Ma`an news has reported, claiming Israeli soldiers deliberately aimed at the footballers feet and legs, causing irreversible damage.
But while there is mounting pressure on FIFA to suspend Israel, some are saying football should not be held hostage to political or religious conflicts. Web users are suggesting that stopping Israel from competing in international tournaments will do nothing to change the situation in the Palestinian territories.
