The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, shares his concerns about the worsening humanitarian situation in Syria. With 2.5 to 3 million refugees at the present time and more arriving every day, he believes that "in a few weeks' time, we'll have more Syrian refugees than any other group of refugees in the world".
But there is more to the Syrian tragedy than the number of refugees and the death toll. Guterres says we must also consider the long-lasting effects of the war on "a whole generation of young people that will be traumatised”. The UN High Commissioner worries that "this impact will last for decades".
Catherine Norris-Trent asks him what he thinks European countries should be doing to help Syrian refugees.
