“The Sound of Music” is one of today’s most well-known stories and the film version even won Best Picture at the Oscars. While that was a known fact when it was first released, over time many may have forgotten the von Trapp family does actually exist, though the movie did change a few things for dramatic effect.
Namely the final scene when the family escapes the Nazi’s by climbing over the mountains never occurred. Instead the family hopped a train from Austria to Italy, eventually settling in Vermont of all places where they opened a mountain resort. While that sounds like a recipe for a bad sitcom, it actually is profitable and still open and available for bookings.
