300-Pound Grizzly Bear Goes Under the Knife

When it comes to seeing an injured animal, most humans have a natural desire to help. Such was the case for veterinarians at Colorado State University, who recently performed surgery on a 300 pound grizzly.

Marley is a 7-year-old female grizzly that was rescued earlier this year from a roadside zoo in Georgia. She wasn’t receiving the best care then.

Marley had been kept in a facility along with more than 15 other bears. All of the animals were kept in cement enclosures.

Once Marley was rescued, she was placed into the care of workers at Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado. It didn’t take long for staff to notice that Marley wasn’t putting on any weight in her legs.

She was transported to Colorado State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where vets probed and examined her. They discovered she had two fractures, which were most likely from the result of living in the concrete pits for so long.

Not long after that finding, doctors at the facility successfully carried out the surgery. Marley is now spending her days at the Wild Animal Sanctuary for her recovery.

The rescuers hope she’ll be able to live another 20 years happily, without pain.
