Casualties in Thai protest crackdown

Thai authorities' most determined effort yet to clear anti-government demonstrators from sites around state offices in the capital erupts into deadly violence.

During the resulting clashes in Bangkok at least one police officer and one protester were killed by gunfire.

Dozens on both sides have been wounded.

Police blamed the protesters for the gunfire.

(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) DEPUTY METRO POLICE CHIEF, MAJOR GENERAL ADUL NARONGSAK SAYING;

"The ammunition (fired by protesters) was all from snipers and M79 grenades were launched. That resulted in one policeman killed and five policemen injured and more than 10 protesters injured."

Security officials said 15, 000 officers were involved in Monday's operation called 'Peace for Bangkok Mission'.

They said about 100 protesters were arrested early on in the day.

The anti-government campaign has been going on since November.
