These were the scenes at an Australian detention centre in Papua New Guinea during an attempted break-out on Sunday.

It's now emerged that a second mass escape bid on Monday resulted in the death of one asylum seeker and injuries to nearly 80.

Australia's immigration minister expressed regret and sympathy over the death but condemned the escape attempts.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON SAYING:

"If people choose to remove themselves from that centre then they're obviously putting themselves at a place of much greater risk, and in an environment like that where there is violent behaviour on the part of those who are breaching the perimeter fence and going out of the centre, then this is a disorderly environment in which there is always greater risk."

The detention centre on Manus island is where Australia sends those who arrive on its shores, often in unsafe boats, after paying people smugglers in Indonesia.
