Gunday - Film Review - Priyanka, Ranveer & Arjun

Gunday starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Irrfan Khan is a tale of two guys, Bala and Bikram, who constantly fight for survival, identity and love. The story revolves around their struggle which starts when they are young boys, during a time when Bangladesh was formed and many were left homeless and how they become the uncrowned gundas/robinhoods of Calcutta. Enter two people who will change their lives forever- ACP Satyajit Sarkar and Cabaret dancer Nandita. Gunday essentially is about how the two beat all odds by going against the system to survive. It is choc-a-block with drama, romance, buddy-love and action. The first half starts off fantastically; it is energetic, entertaining and full of promise but the second half falters, the energy somewhat fizzles and leaves you deflated.

Ranveer and Arjun bring out the best in each other. While Ranveer as Bikram is spot on, Arjun as Bala, though good needs to still smoothen the rough edges. Priyanka Chopra looks stunning and portrays her character effectively. Irrfan Khan lives upto expectation. Saurabh Shukla does well. The two boys who play the young Bala & Bikram are excellent.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar turns out quite an entertainer but the film which seems to be made in the same genre of a Butch Cassidy And Sundance Kid or even a Sholay fails to leave an impression, as in, the film or the characters don't remain with you. Ali and cinematographer Aseem have done an excellent job of recreating the Calcutta of yore.
