Venezuela: President Maduro issues arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez
Vigils have been held in Venezuela to remember three people killed during anti-government protests.
Around 10,000 demonstrators had marched in Caracas on Wednesday. At the end, when most people had gone home, gunmen on motorbikes opened fire into the crowds.
Both the government and the opposition accuse each other of being behind the deaths.
Amongst those killed were both a pro-government and an anti-government activist.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities have issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez on charges of murder and terrorism linked to the three deaths.
The president accuses him of instigating violence to try to stage a coup.
“I say to these fascist fugitives turn yourself over! Turn yourself in to the justice system. You are responsible for the bloodbath that could have been a tragedy for Venezuela,” President Maduro said.
The march was the latest in a series protests against the lack of security and the poor state of the country’s economy.
“We want to show the Venezuelan people with these demonstrations that they are not alone, that all the students are here fighting for them. We are here to support them.” said Francisco Pareja, a student and protester.
Amnesty International has said that Venezuela must investigate the deaths and called for any protesters in detention to be “charged with a crime or immediately released.”
