Anti-US anger strong as Tehran marks Islamic Revolution

Anti-US and anti-Israeli chants and slogans could be heard ringing out across the Iranian capital as thousands celebrated the Islamic Revolution.

“I’m here to defend my homeland – I’m here to tell America it can’t do anything it wants,” said one protester.

Those sentiments were shared by other demonstrators.

“We are a strong nation when it comes to difficult days. How many sanctions did they impose on us? Nothing happened to us. Why did they come to the negotiation table? Because we won. We’ve became so strong that they had to negotiate with us. They never condescend to talk to weak people,” one woman said.

Despite the sounds of opposition, it remains hard to gauge Iranians’ real sentiment as thousands of people are offered free trips to Tehran to support the government.
