Lack of Ink in Fax Leads to Suspected Killer Being Set Free

A man who was accused of murder in France had to be set free thanks to a technical glitch. Specifically the loophole pertained to the court’s fax machine running out of ink.

A man who was accused of murder in France had to be set free due to the court’s fax machine running out of ink. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Amadou F had been behind bars for the murder of Claudy Elisor.
The victim was killed on New Year’s Eve in 2010 while working as a DJ at a private party. The accused faxed an appeal regarding his incarceration while awaiting his trial.
By French law, the court must respond to all appeals within 20 days. Because the fax was out of ink, court authorities never saw the appeal.
There was also no maintenance contract for the fax. That seemingly small technical error led to the release of the suspect.
The victim’s widow, Fabienne Elisor, is concerned the suspect will now fail to show for the trial and stated “This man has been freed for a problem of fax ink. I am disgusted. I don’t understand how such a thing can happen…I am appalled at the attitude of the justice system to us.”
