Following an outcry over the fate of stray dogs in Sochi, local authorities have built makeshift shelters to try and combat the problem.

"I think it is good, that this subject is being discussed again and that the mayor decided to solve it.

The shelters are an attempt to counter accusations from animal activists that stray dogs are being killed to produce a spotless image of Olympic venues.

"The poisoning is going on... yes. I keep seeing poisoned bait. This is repulsive, they are dying in horrible pain."

"You don't see what's going on here? My sister wrote to me that she saw piles of dog bodies."

This new shelter houses about forty dogs, a tiny percentage of the thousands of animals around the city. But there are plans to expand it and move to a different location.
