Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of winter.

The famous rodent emerged from his burrow in the western Pennsylvania town on Punxsutawney on Sunday, Groundhog Day.

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED OFFICIAL SAYING:

"Ladies and gentlemen, Punxsutawney Phil!"

According to legend, if Phil sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of snow and freezing temperatures.

If he doesn't, the U.S. can expect an early spring.

Phil did see his shadow and, with it, dashed any hopes for an early end to winter weather.

And for the first time ever, Groundhog Day coincides with the Super Bowl.

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED OFFICIAL SAYING:

"A Super Bowl winner I will not predict but my weather forecast you cannot contradict. Why, that's not a football but a shadow I see. It's six more weeks of weather it must be!"

The Denver Broncos face off against the Seattle Seahawks in East Rutherford, NJ, Sunday for Super Bowl XLVIII.
