What If A Deadly Asteroid Heads Towards Earth?

There are several asteroids that have a chance at hitting Earth in the future. 65 million years ago a 10 kilometre wide asteroid hit Earth which was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs and if something like that was to happen again to us it could extinct species all around the world, including humans.

It's thought that there are almost 5,000 potentially hazardous asteroids which are more than 100 meters in diameter which if any of them hit Earth could cause a tsunami or destroy a city.

An asteroid which is 1 km in diameter is believed to be big enough to cause the extinction of humans if it was to impact Earth, or cause a lot of devastation around the planet at a minimum.

So let's say there was an asteroid which was pretty big which was heading towards Earth, could we stop it from impacting Earth?
