Mexican family receives Tamayo's remains after U.S. execution

A homecoming for Edgar Tamayo.

Hundreds line the streets of Miacatlan holding candles, a small Mexican town in the state of Morelos as they welcome back his body. He was executed by lethal injection in Texas on January 22.

His coffin is taken into his family's home for a wake ahead of his burial.

In 1994, Tamayo was convicted for shooting a Houston police officer to death. That put him at the center of a diplomatic spat between the United States and Mexico.

Tamayo was denied an 11-hour stay of execution by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mexico had called on Texas to halt the execution, saying it was a violation of international law. The Mexican government maintains that Tamayo was not informed of his right to diplomatic assistance in the case.

For now, the mariachis play on at they prepare to lay his body to rest.
