Brokeback Mountain opera premieres in Madrid

The operatic version of the tragic love story of two Wyoming cowboys told in "Brokeback Mountain" debuted in Madrid, Spain.

First published as a short story in 1997, "Brokeback Mountain" went on to get an Oscar-winning film adaptation from director Ang Lee in 2005.

Fast forward a couple of years, its theme of same-sex relationship and unattainable love piques the interest of composer Charles Wuorinen.

"It is not like these stock operatic versions of the same problems which have no interest to us anymore. They may have had social relevance a hundred and hundred years ago or more but now they are just boring. This, on the other hand is fraught and has therefore, that kind of immediacy."

In the lead are tenor Tom Randle as the optimistic and impulsive Jack Twist, and bass Danie l Okulitch voicing the character of introverted Ennis Del Mar.
