With dating online, you can never be sure what you’re getting into. An unidentified woman in San Jose was recently scammed out of half a million dollars after meeting a man on the website, Christianmingle.com.

The 66-year-old victim was contacted through the site by a man who claimed to be British. He said he was stuck at sea on an oil rig.

The male repeatedly called the elderly woman, texted her and even sent her flowers. After the man suspected he had her in his grasp, he asked for a loan to assist him in a startup business.

The lady was eager to help and withdrew money from her retirement account. She also refinanced her home.

The male had used a fake photo on the dating site and even created another website for his fraudulent business, which listed the victim’s name as a company authority.

Shortly after the last installment of $200,000 was sent for him to a bank in Turkey, the female got suspicious and alerted her local district attorney’s office.

Although the woman claimed she couldn’t detect an accent over the phone, authorities determined the man was in fact Nigerian.

An associate of the suspect was arrested and $200,000 out of $500,000 have been recovered
but thus far the scamming suitor remains at large.
