Fifty-year-old Peter De Wit wakes up in the middle of the night and realizes, to his horror, that he is in the cold room of a morgue. How did he get there? He can't remember, he doesn't want to remember. He steals the wallet formerly belonging to one of the corpses, and assuming a new identity, decides to make a fresh start and invent a whole new life for himself. He becomes Lars Erickson, a Swedish businessman passing through Brussels, and wanders through the city's neighborhoods, slipping into this character which he improvises to suit the needs of the situation. One evening, he comes across Lucie, a young, neurotic artist who seems to have lost her memory. Almost without thinking about it, like connected vessels, the mythomania of one makes up for the amnesia of the other, and Peter gives himself a prime role in the young woman's life.
