Bangkok shutdown as anti-government protest takes hold
As anti-government protesters bring the Thai capital Bangkok to a standstill on a day of mass action. Prime Minister Yingluk Shinawatra has moved to diffuse the increasingly tense situation.
Shinawatra has called on protest leaders to discuss a proposal by the Election Commission to push back the snap ballot called for February 2 to May 4.
Ministers say it is not possible under the constitution. The commission disagrees.
Those opposed to Yingluk say she is a front for her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted by the military in 2006.
Protesters want a “People’s Council” to run the country until changes to the constitution are put in place.
Demonstrators began their action to bring down the government last November and since then eight people have been killed.
Over the weekend an unknown gunman opened fire at a protester meeting point in Bangkok.
