Bushfire threatens homes in Western Australia

A bushfire is threatening homes in the suburb of Parkerville in Western Australia, near Perth, on Sunday (January 12), local media reported.

One home was destroyed as flames reached 20 metres (65.7 feet) in height.

An emergency warning has been issued, and authorities said as of Sunday afternoon that it was too late for residents in eastern Parkerville to move from their homes, and doing so could be deadly.

A number of roads have been closed. Spot fires were starting about 3 kilometers ahead of the fire, The West Australian website reported.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services told local media the blaze was moving rapidly and heading east.

More than 70 firefighters were on the scene, assisted by helicopters dumping water.
