Venezuela mourns former beauty queen Monica Spear

Venezuelans are mourning the loss of former beauty queen Monica Spear after she was shot dead with her ex-husband in a car robbery that went horribly wrong.

People queued outside the chapel where services will be held on Friday for the former Miss Venezuela.

Would-be robbers apparently put something on the road that punctured the tyres. When the car stopped, the armed robbers appeared.

The pair’s five-year-old daughter survived the attack but has a bullet lodged in her leg.

Monica’s father, Rafael Spear, told reporters that she was the only one of his children he could not convince to leave Venezuela:

“We have to end violence in Venezuela. We are a beautiful country, too beautiful for acts like these to keep happening. To the opposition, to the government, to the non-political, to those who are neutral, we have to unite in one way or another to end this karma that is destroying our children, our parents, our brothers,” said Rafael Spear.

Venezuela’s Minister of Interior and Justice Miguel Rodriguez Torres told reporters that seven suspects have been detained.

The slaying has shocked Venezuela, and brought people out on to the streets furious that Venezuela’s soaring violet crime rate has claimed another two victims.
