Bad Directors: Ridley Scott 2

It might be a stretch to say that Ridley Scott has lost his touch. Then again, it might not. Scott's career trajectory is one of slow stagnation versus a sudden disappearance of talent. Alien and Blade Runner are still rightly held up in the annals of film lore as seminal sci-fi works, and Scott has churned out several more modern masterpieces with Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down. So what went wrong? Well, similar to Spike Lee's filmography, more and more mediocrity crept into Scott's work with subpar movies like White Squall, A Good Year and Robin Hood popping up alongside decent movies like Matchstick Men and American Gangster. The last few years in particular have been unkind to Scott. Robin Hood came and went like a thief in the night. Prometheus' faults generated as much disappointment as praise, and last year's The Counselor was either widely misunderstood or just happened to be one of the worst movies of the year. With Exodus and a Blade Runner followup on the horizon, we'll either get re-introduced to Ridley Scott, the visionary -- or Ridley Scott, the sluggish has-been.
