Princess Cristina of Spain has been charged with tax fraud and money laundering and could face a trial.

The Superior Justice Tribunal of the Balearic Islands made the ruling on Tuesday.

Christina's husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, was charged earlier with fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement of six million euros in public funds through his charitable foundation.

The couple has denied any wrongdoing.

Christina has been summounded to appear in court in early March.

The charges, plus other scandals, like King Juan Carlos' extravagant elephant hunting trip during the height of country's economic crisis have dragged public opnion of the royal family to an all time low.
