The U.S. Senate kicks off its 2014 session and made history by approving Janet Yellen as the first woman to head the Federal Reserve, with a vote of 56 to 26.

Yellen succeeds Ben Bernanke, whose second four-year term ends on January 31.

Yellen has been an unwavering advocate of the Fed's aggressive steps to boost the U.S. economy as it struggled to emerge from a severe economic recession.
